Shiv
Khera, in this essay “How to Win?”, focuses on the development of self esteem
as the key element for a successful life. This essay “How to Win?” is an
extract from the book “You can Win”. The positive attitude conquers the
barriers on the road to success.
The author opens the essay by explaining what self-esteem is. Self-esteem is how we feel
about ourselves as a whole, including our strengths and weaknesses. When we
feel good within, our performance goes up, our relationships improve both at
home and at work. The world looks nicer. There is a direct correlation between
feeling and behaviour.
Shiv Khera then gives the
formula to build positive esteem. The fastest way to build positive self-esteem
is to do something for others who cannot repay you in cash or kind.
The author gives many
examples to explain this formula to build positive esteem. A few years ago, the
author taught attitude and self-esteem programs to jail inmates. After two
weeks, an inmate met the author and said he reads his bible everyday and his
attitude has changed, after this program. Shiv Khera asked the inmate, what he
is going to do when he leaves jail. He answered that he was going to “try” to
be a contributing member of the society. When the author asked the same
question the second time, he gave the same answer. But when he asked the
question again for the third time, the inmate told angrily that “he is going to
be a contributing member of the society”. He changed the answer from “try” to “be”. The difference
is the word "try." He got rid of the word try. This made the world of
difference. Self esteem creates results.
Shiv Khera explains why he
does these act of services to the inmates. It is for a selfish reason. It is to
create a better society so that he could live in a peaceful and a safe world.
This selfish desire makes him to do the act of service.
Shiv Khera says that there
are two types of people in the world: takers and givers. Takers eat well and
givers sleep well. Givers have a good sense of themselves, a positive outlook,
and they help other people. Serving society help others but it only helps oneself.
As people, we all need to
both give and receive. But a healthy person with a high sense of self-worth has
both the need to take and the need to give.
Shiv Khera in this essay
explains the ways to build self-esteem which is to help others. When one help
others, he helps himself. Shiv Khera advocates this philosophy of self-esteem.
