[alert-primary] Act-wise Summary [/alert-primary]

Act 1
The play begins with Egyptians. Serapion tells his friends about last night's supernatural events. Alexas, Cleopatra's eunuch, warns Serapion not to tell others his cooked dreams.
Knight Ventidius arrives. Alexas recognises him and tells the citizens that despite his hatred, Ventidius is the bravest Roman. Alexas announces Egypt will celebrate Antony's birthday with pomp and show as Ventidius approaches. Ventidius is upset because Antony's life is in danger and Egyptians are celebrating his suffering.
Ventidius tells Alexas that Cleopatra "unmanned" Antony. Antony was a brave soldier, but Cleopatra's false love rendered him useless. Ventidius asks about Antony, who is depressed and doesn't socialise. Antony hasn't eaten in days, he learns. Antony's friend Ventidius visits him.
When Ventidius weeps, Antony feels pity and they reconcile. Ventidius praises his chivalry and asks him to accompany him to the Nile, where 10,000 brave soldiers are waiting to fight Caesar. Antony first refuses, then agrees to leave Egypt. Ventidius says Cleopatra ruined him. Antony asks him to stop criticising Cleopatra. He leaves her for honour.
Act 2
Alexas tells Cleopatra about Antony and Ventidius. Cleopatra weeps. Charmion describes the situation. Cleopatra asks about Antony. Charmion tells her Antony is just as sad. Alexas gives Cleopatra a plan to sway Antony. Antony and Ventidius mock Octavius' cowardice. Alexas tells Antony Cleopatra prayed for him and gave him gifts.
He then gives soldiers bracelets. Ventidius rejects them as "poisoned gifts" and says, "I'm not ashamed of honest poverty, nor can all the diamonds of the east buy my faith."
Antony accepts Ventidius' gift but can't wear it. Enter Cleopatra. Antony blames her because she caused the death of his first wife and the separation from his second wife, Octavia, Caesar's sister. He reminds her of the last battle she abandoned him in and ran away from. He tells her Julius Caesar's mistress accepted her.
Cleopatra defends herself by saying she gave her body to Julius Caesar but her soul to Antony and showing him a page with Octavius Caesar's writing. Antony reads the message and learns that Caesar offered Cleopatra safety if she handed over Antony. Antony disintegrates.
"He melts, we conquer," says Alexas. They reconcile. Ventidius, frustrated and helpless, says, "O women! Women! All the gods don't have your power to harm man.
Act 3
Antony and Cleopatra enjoy love. Both applaud. Antony says, "In thy embrace, heaven and earth would embrace me." Enter Ventidius. Ventidius stops Antony from leaving unnoticed. Antony tells Ventidius he has killed 5,000 Romans and asks him not to repeat previous statements (of Octavius Caesar). Ventidius says Octavius has enough soldiers, but danger remains.
Antony says he had a friend in Caesar's army (Dolabella). Dolabella fell in love with Cleopatra, so Antony made him leave Egypt. Ventidius calls Dolabella. Dolabella and Antony miss each other. Ventidius and Dolabella mock Antony for serving Cleopatra and remind him of Octavia. They tell him to reconcile with Octavia to eliminate Caesar's threat. Ventidius brings Octavia's daughters.
Antony's cold. Dolabella and Ventidius scold him and make him accept his wife and daughters. Antony finally agrees to leave Egypt. Cleopatra is saddened by Antony and Octavia's reconciliation. Alexas says Antony will change his mind. Octavia enters and the women discuss Antony. Cleopatra fears losing Antony when Octavia leaves.
Act 4
Antony convinces Dolabella to say goodbye to Cleopatra because he can't. Antony persuades Dolabella to agree. Dolabella deceives his friend by proposing to Cleopatra.
Alexas convinces Cleopatra to show Antony she loves Dolabella so he'll return to her. Dolabella tells Cleopatra that Antony criticised her. She faints. Dolabella repents and tells Cleopatra the truth, and she tells him why she showed him sympathy to make Antony jealous.
Ventidius and Octavia, hearing part of their conversation, assume they're in love and tell Antony. Antony is sceptical. Ventidius brings Alexas to prove his statement, who agrees. Antony's furious. Dolabella and Cleopatra enter later, unaware. Antony thinks they're both dishonest. Antony dominates. Both leave sad.
Act 5
Cleopatra blames Alexas for putting her in this predicament and orders him to fix it. Serapion advises her to stay in her castle. Alexas saves himself. He tells Antony Cleopatra killed herself. Antony recognises Cleopatra's innocence and feels useless without her.
He requests Ventidius' death. Ventidius commits suicide. Antony wounds himself with his sword but isn't dead. Cleopatra rushes to Antony after hearing Alexas's words. Both agree. She dies holding Antony. Cleopatra dies in Antony's arms from a snake bite. Caesar takes Egypt.
