[alert-primary] Biography [/alert-primary]
Sir James Matthew Barrie was born on May 9, 1860, in the Scottish town of Kirriemuir in the county of Forfarshire. He was the ninth child and the youngest of David Barrie and Margaret Ogilvy Barrie's three sons. David Barrie was a weaver, and Margaret Ogilvy Barrie was his wife. He went to Glasgow Academy, Dumfries Academy, and Edinburgh University. In 1882, he got his master's degree in arts from Edinburgh University. In 1894, he married a young actress in London named Mary Ansell. In 1909, they were no longer together.
Barrie wanted to be a writer since he was a young boy. When he graduated from high school, he got a job as a writer and sub-editor on the Nottingham Journal. He was in charge of publishing, but he also had time to write sketches and stories, which he put in the St. James's Gazette without his name on them.
In March 1885, Barrie moved to London because he wanted to make a living from writing. Between 1885 and 1890, his work was published in many magazines, mostly under the name "Gavin Ogilvy." The British Weekly was the magazine that published his work the most. In 1889, he began putting his own name on his works.
In 1891, Barrie's early plays started to be put on stage. But when his first book, The Little Minister, came out the same year, it made him a lot more money. The book was an instant hit, and Barrie got a job on the staff of Speaker, a weekly paper, because of it.
Sentimental Tommy, which he wrote in 1896, and Tommy and Grizel, which he wrote in 1900, are two other important books by Barrie.
But the stage turned out to be his best way to talk. Quality Street, which was first put on in Toledo, Ohio, in 1901, made Barrie a well-known playwright in both the United States and Great Britain. During World War I, it was translated into German and ran for a long time in Berlin.
Another play came right after the first one. Most are comedies, and some are close to being farces. All of them have been well-liked by audiences. Barrie's stories have clear plots, and the people in them are interesting. Some literary historians think of Barrie as a writer of sentimental stories for children because the ideas in his plays aren't always important enough to make them serious drama. In some ways, this is true. Barrie is a man who, like many of the characters in his books, never grew up. Barrie is the one who came up with Sentimental Tommy, Peter Pan, and Mary Rose. But to judge all of Barrie's works by a few of them, or to know him only through the cartoon version of his great fantasy Peter Pan: or, The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up, is to misjudge his art and miss the important ideas in several of his works.
Both The Admirable Crichton and Dear Brutus are important works with important goals.Barrie died in London on June 19, 1937.
