[alert-primary] Biography [/alert-primary]
Thomas Osborne, an advertisement writer, and Nellie Beatrice, a working-class barmaid, gave birth to John Osborne in London, England, in 1929. In 1941, his father passed away. Osborne paid for himself to attend Belmont College, a private boarding school, with the proceeds from a life insurance settlement. After only a few years, Osborne was expelled for assaulting the headmaster. He graduated from high school with a certificate of completion, but he never went to college or university.
After returning home, Osborne took on a variety of odd jobs before settling into a career in theatre. He began his career as a stage hand, actor, and writer with Anthony Creighton's provincial touring company. Before writing and submitting Look Back in Anger for production, Osborne co-wrote two plays: The Devil Inside Him and Personal Enemy.
The play, which Osborne wrote in a matter of weeks, was flatly rejected by the agents and production companies to whom he first submitted it. It was eventually picked up for production by George Devine's failing Royal Court Theater. Both Osborne and the Royal Court Theater were struggling financially, and the production of Look Back in Anger was seen as a risk by both. The play received mixed reviews after its premiere. However, it received a number of positive reviews from prominent theatre critics, and Osborne was soon hailed as one of the most promising young playwrights in the United Kingdom.
Lawrence Olivier, the famous actor, approached Osborne in the late 1950s about writing and producing a play for him. Osborne wrote The Entertainer, a play that uses a failing music hall to metaphorically explore the decline of the British empire. The play received critical acclaim, and Olivier was cast in the lead role. Throughout the 1960s, Osborne continued to write for the stage. Luther, a play based on Martin Luther's life, was one of his critically acclaimed and commercially successful works. Osborne received an Academy Award for his screen adaptation of Tom Jones in 1963.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Osborne worked in the arts and entertainment industries. He not only wrote plays, but also screenplays, television adaptations, and autobiographies. During this time, Osborne made several acting appearances. He appeared in a number of well-known Hollywood movies, including Get Carter and Flash Gordon. He received numerous awards for his work later in life, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Writers Guild in the United Kingdom. Osborne died of diabetes-related complications at the age of 65.
