         Lovewit gave his house to Jeremy and left for London. Face is Jeremy's stage name. He lives in Lovewit's house with subtle, an alchemist, and Dol Common. They run a fraud ring from home. Face and subtle argue throughout the play. Each talks about his supremacy in the business they run. Don mediates and forces them to shake hands. Meanwhile, a legal clerk knocks and enters. Face is "Captain Face" and Subtle is "Doctor." 

     Dapper wants a gambling spirit. Subtle promises to get him a fairy from the queen of fairies. He tells Dapper to wash and bring a clean shirt. Drugger enters after Dapper. He learns where to put his tobacco shop. Subtle requests tobacco and damask. Dol intervenes and warns Face and Subtle about Sir Epicure Mammon's visit. 

    
Sir Epicure Mammon is thrilled that Subtle has promised him a Philosopher's stone. Sir Mammon and Sir Pertinax stand by the door. Face plays "Lungs," a doctor's lab assistant, as the two conmen amaze Mammon and irritate Surly with their twisted scientific language. Face tells Surly he'll meet him at temple church in half an hour. Sir Mammon sees Dol and begs Face to meet with him. 

        Ananias, an Anabaptist, angers Subtle. He wants Subtle to give him the Philosopher's stone so he can convert people. His priest Tribulation returns. Drugger then brings Kastril. Kastril learns to fight and scouts the joint to see if this man is suitable for his rich, widowed sister, Dame Pliant. Face wows Kastril. Face and Subtle robbed Dapper with a fairy rite. Mammon is engaged by Dol in the outhouse while Face pretends Subtle is unaware. 

        A widow brings another entry. Face encounters Surly disguised as a Spanish Don. Face and Subtle are discussing who will marry the widow, and Face mocks the Spaniard by saying they'll deceive him. They tricked the Spaniard into marrying the widow while Dol was busy with Mammon. 

        Dol is cosy with Mammon. "Father" catches them (Subtle). He tells them that because of their illegal activities, the furnace and Alchemist equipment exploded. Mammon rushed out the door after losing his investment. 

        All the clients gather at the door without warning. Later, Surly joins the clients in the room, while Face escapes. Face becomes "Jeremy the Butler" after Dol tells them Lovewit has arrived. 

        When love arrives, neighbours and clients surround him. When Face's voice emerges from the privy, Dapper forces him to admit everything. Face blames Dol and subtle, but they escape penniless and the clients return with police and a search warrant. The clients search the house but leave empty-handed. Kastril, Lovewit, and his wife exit. Face is paid and gives an epilogue.
