[alert-primary] Short Summary [/alert-primary]
The setting of the play is the time after the Second World War, when the newly educated people from lower-class backgrounds are angry and depressed because of the war. The idea of a welfare state and the educational opportunities it gives to young, ambitious people in this community turns out to be a mirage, since most of the power and positions are still held by the wealthy few. The old aristocracy's continued success is a rude surprise to those who thought that real meritocracy would lead to rewards. The result is a feeling of hopelessness, wrongness, and anger. This is the social setting that Osborne's play looks at.
Jimmy Porter, a young man from a lower social class, is the hero of Osborn's play. Porter is a high school graduate from a small town who has a lot of energy and ambition. He is married to a girl from an upper class family. He feels like he was tricked and doesn't fit in with a social order that makes a lot of promises but doesn't have a real plan for making the welfare state ideal a reality. This has made him very sad and angry at the establishment. Since he has no good way to use his energy and skills and no way to reach his goals, he gets angry and thinks about the past and what he was hoping for. His anger makes him pretty cruel to his well-behaved and well-raised young wife. This young man's angry, sadistic mood is definitely a new and important theme for modern theatre. This new piece of drama starts with a scene from Osborne's play.
"Look Back in Anger" by Osborne has a lot to do with the modern literary trend to show how young people are getting more frustrated and confused because all the heroic causes are gone and there are no good, brave causes left. The picture shows how sadistic and self-pitying people can be, and Osborne captures this with uncanny accuracy.
The play by Osborne is very serious and has a lot to say. Even the name of the book has a lot of meaning. It shows how frustrated the characters are and how much they miss a world they don't know much about. Their idea of the perfect life is empty and messed up. This is a very important lesson for everyone.
This play is set in a small town, and the dramatic dialogue fits right in with that. The hero's sharp, taunting, and staccoto language is a new twist on modern English dramatic dialogue.
