[alert-primary] Super Short Summary [/alert-primary]
On November 1, 1610 a plague ravaged the streets of London. The man Lovewit has left his home town and moved to the country to avoid getting sick. He has left the house in the care of his servant, Jeremy. This was a mistake.
While his master is away, Jeremy calls himself "Face" and runs a scamming business out of the house with the con man Subtle and the prostitute Doll Common. With Subtle posing as a master of alchemy, astrology, and magical arts, the trio tricks their customers, who pay a lot of money, in many different ways.
Dapper, who thinks that Subtle is a sorcerer, wants a spirit to help him gamble. Abel Drugger, a tobacconist who believes in superstitions, wants to know how to set up his new store in the best way. Sir Epicure Mammon, who is promiscuous and spends a lot of money, has asked Subtle to make him the philosopher's stone. He thinks it will bring him unlimited wealth, power, and pleasures, such as "a list of wives and concubines equal to Solomon." Elders of a strict Protestant sect in Amsterdam named Tribulation Wholesome and Ananias also pay Subtle to make the philosopher's stone so that they can use it to make money for their group and fight against the Catholics. Only Sir Epicure's friend Pertinax Surly doesn't believe it.
"The Alchemist" is a biting satire of human stupidity and greed. The customers of Subtle, Face, and Doll are not only ripped off, but they are also punished in ways that fit their vices and hypocrisies. But Subtle and Face fight over Dame Pliant, a young, wealthy widow, and Surly, who is suspicious, almost finds out about their plans.
In the end, Subtle and Face figure out a way to get all of the customers and Surly to leave. But when Lovewit, the owner of the house, comes back unexpectedly, Subtle and Doll run away. Lovewit and his servant Face, who is now called "Jeremy," make a plan to say that nothing happened in the house while he was away. This makes Abel, Sir Epicure, Surly, and the Puritans angry. Lovewit gets all of the things that they stole and marries Dame Pliant.
