The play takes place in 1429-1431 and 1456. During the 100 Years War, England occupied several French cities and towns. Joan asks Robert de Baudricourt for armour, a horse, and soldiers. Joan, a young girl from a small village, has visions of saints telling her it is her destiny to lead French forces to victory and crown the Dauphin as King. Robert hesitates to support Joan until he sees that she can inspire men to fight for her.
Joan goes to Chinon, where the Dauphin has a court. Despite being tricked, she easily identifies the Dauphin, leading others to believe she's guided by God. Joan convinces the Dauphin that she'll free besieged Orleans and crown him at Rheims Cathedral. Joan leads troops to Orleans, where the French are defeated. They need a wind shift to sail upriver and attack the English from behind. Joan prays, and the wind changes, allowing France to win.
The French victory at Orleans worries English leaders. Earlier in the war, the English allied with the Burgundians, who opposed Charles' royal house. English nobleman Warwick meets Burgundian Bishop Cauchon. Both men agree Joan must be killed. In Rheims Cathedral, Charles is crowned. Joan worries that she's becoming unpopular because she's proud, stubborn, and reckless. Joan wants to lead forces to retake Paris after Charles' coronation, but no one agrees. Joan insists on following God's will.
In 1431, the play's action resumes. Joan has been sold to the English by Burgundian forces. Church officials are questioning her about heresy charges. Joan wears men's clothes and insists her voices are divine messengers. When threatened with execution, Joan signs a confession and recantation. Even though her life will be spared, she'll be imprisoned for life. Joan weeps as she recants. She's executed immediately. Other characters say she showed courage during her execution.
25 years later, the play's epilogue begins. Joan has been declared innocent after an inquiry into her trial. Charles, now a strong French king, has a vision of her. Many characters join them, proving that Joan's enemies were wrong. A 1920s-style man announces Joan's sainthood. Joan suggests she should return to life because of all the praise. All her allies abandon her, saying it's a bad idea. Joan wonders when the world will fully accept her at the end of the play.
