Doctor
Faustus, a smart German scholar at Wittenberg, complains about how
little people can know. He thinks that he has learned everything he can
from traditional academic subjects. All of these things haven't made him
happy, so he's now trying magic. A Good Angel and an Evil Angel show
up, which shows that Faustus has to choose between following his
Christian conscience and going to hell. The first one tells him to stop
trying to do magic, and the second one tempts him
Valdes
and Cornelius teach him the black arts, and he summons a devil to begin
his career as a magician. Faustus tells Mephastophilis to return to
Lucifer with his soul in exchange for 24 years of service. Wagner,
Faustus' servant, has magical powers and enlists Robin the clown.
Mephastophilis tells Faustus Lucifer accepted his offer. Faustus has misgivings and wonders if he should repent and save his soul, but he signs the deal with his blood. "Homo fuge," Latin for "Man, fly," is branded on his arm. Mephastophilis gives Faustus rich gifts and a book of spells. Later, Mephastophilis answers Faustus' questions about the world, refusing to say who made it. This refusal causes Faustus to have more doubts, but Mephastophilis and Lucifer bring personifications of the Seven Deadly Sins to impress him.
Faustus travels with Mephastophilis and his new powers. He becomes invisible and performs tricks at the pope's court in Rome. He steals food and punches the pope's ears at his banquet. After this, he travels through Europe's courts, gaining fame. Eventually, he is invited to the court of the German emperor Charles V (the pope's enemy), who asks Faustus to let him see Alexander the Great. Charles is impressed by Faustus' Alexander image. A knight mocks Faustus' powers, so Faustus gives him antlers. The knight swears vengeance.
Wagner's clown, Robin, has learned some magic and has comic misadventures with Rafe. At one point, he summons Mephastophilis, who threatens to turn Robin and Rafe into animals.
Faustus then travels and tricks a horse-courser. Faustus sells him a horse that dissolves in water. Faustus performs at the Duke of Vanholt's court. The horse-courser, Robin, Dick (Rafe in the A text), and other Faustus victims are there. Faustus casts spells on them to the duke and duchess' amusement.
Faustus dreads dying as the 24 years of his deal with Lucifer end. He has Mephastophilis call Helen of Troy to impress scholars. Faustus rejects an old man's pleas to repent. Faustus calls Helen and praises her beauty. Time is limited. The scholars are horrified by Faustus' pact and vow to pray for him. Faustus is overcome with fear and regret the night before the 24th year ends. But it's too late. At midnight, demons carry his soul to hell. The scholars find Faustus' limbs in the morning and hold a funeral.
