The former president Dr. Sarvapalli
Radhakrishan in his convocation address stresses the importance of good
character. “Character is Destiny” is the
essay taken from “The Present Crisis of Faith”. Dr. Radhakrishnan says that the
nature of the character decides the future. The fate of nation is dependent on
the character of the people. The right thinking and right conduct are the
foundation of life. He explains the power of a strong character with honesty,
courage and discipline.
Dr Radhakrishnan helps
Westerners understand "the greatness of Indian culture." He explains
that science and technology must be studied along with great literature,
philosophy, and religion.
Big changes like the
Renaissance, the Reformation, the political revolution, and the industrial
revolution are happening all at once in India. To keep up with these huge
changes, universities must keep making more and more scientists and
technicians.
Science alone cannot solve
one's problems. Democracy should not be in paper but in ways of thinking and
acting. Radhakrishnan tells students to focus on their studies of literature
and philosophy and not read them like cricket stories.
Dr. S. Radhakrishan says
that a university education isn't complete if it only teaches science and
technology and doesn't teach them how to be good people. Men who don't have
compassion will turn into demons. A college education that doesn't teach about
humanism isn't complete. He also says that a university is like a family, where
trade union mentality has no place.
Radhakrishnan tells
students that developing their character is the most important thing they can
do. The future of a country depends on the character of its people. Without
good character one cannot achieve greatness. We cannot climb a mountain if the
ground at our feet is shaky. In the same way, if your character is bad, you
won't get very far.
Radhakrishnan tells
students to work hard and not expect anything in return. They should have high
standards to live by. They should be clean, kind, and committed to doing work
for other people.
Thus, in this essay "Character
is Destiny" Dr. S. Radhakrishnan explains how the character shapes destiny
of the nations.
