"Give Us a Role Model" is
an extract from the book “Ignited Minds” written by the Missile Man of India Dr
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. He stresses on the value of believing in
oneself. This faith enables you to perform tasks that are impossible.
Abdul Kalam begins his essay with
the words of Mahatma Gandhi.
“Men often become what they
believe themselves to be.
If I believe I cannot, then I cannot. But If I
believe I can, then I can”.
Kalam says that he assessed his worth
by the value of his contribution. He says that this is the secret that made him
to reach great heights from the island of Rameswaram. We are all a part of cosmic
energy. Therefore, we must follow a lifestyle that answers a need that rises deep
within you.
APJ Abdul Kalam encourages everyone
to have role models. Therefore, he decides to meet students to answer their
questions and inspire them. A number of questions were raised by students of
Tripura School. A student asked him where and how to find a role model. Kalam
advises the students to look to their parents and teachers as role models until
they are fifteen years old. A child learns the value system only from their
parents and teachers. A teacher
generates creativity in the child and makes them to be mature.
Students questioned Dr. Abdul Kalam
about his favourite books that affected him. He named four books that he
considered to be among his favourites:
1. “Man the Unknown”, written by
physician-turned-philosopher Dr. Alexis Carrel who encourages readers to pursue
medical careers.
2. The Tiruvalluvar’s "Thirukkural”, which offers an
excellent code of life.
3. “Many Lamps”, by Lillian Eichler Watson, which
enlightened his life and
4. The Holy
Qur'an.
Kalam was questioned by a smart boy
during a different trip to Anand, Gujarat, who asked, “who is our enemy?”. The
same boy gave the response “poverty”. The final question from a student was, “Tell
me sir, are Pakistani weapons stronger than Indian ones?”. Kalam answers that
we belittle our capacity. India can design, develop, and construct any kind of
missile and nuclear weapons. India is one among the four countries in the world
who can create nuclear weapons.
Role models play a guiding role, when
we try and excel. Role models can help us focus on what is right. They can lead
us to great success. Kalam ends his essay by saying that India can and should
achieve more. Renaissance is essential to become a knowledge superpower.
