David Lee Roth's poem "Nine Gold Medals" is about compassion and brotherhood. The poem illustrates the importance of working together in the world of competition. Life is not a competition of races. The most important thing is to finish life with a smile on your face and your hands in the hands of others.
This poem begins by informing us about nine athletes who came from different countries to compete in the Special Olympics hundred-yard dash. They were fighting for gold, silver, and bronze medals. They worked hard to get ready for the event, and finally the day came.
The spectators gathered around the old field to cheer the nine athletes who were ready to compete. The crowd was much excited about the race which was about to begin. The athletes were all lined up. They are now waiting for the sound of the gun.
The pistol exploded, the signal was given and they started the race. All the nine athletes charged ahead in their own tracks. But then something unexpected happened.
“the smallest among them, he stumbled and staggered
And fell to the asphalt instead.”
The shortest athlete stumbled and fell on his knees to the ground. The next stanza explains his emotions and pain. He has seen all his practice, hopes and future fell apart. He let out his cry of pain and frustration.
However, something strange happened. The other eight athletes who are ahead of him stopped and returned one by one. They helped him to stand up on his feet. After picking up, they joined hand and started walking towards the finish line together. The poet beautifully points out:
"The hundred-yard dash now reduced to a walk
And a banner above that said (Special Olympics)
Could not have been more on the mark".
The poet concludes his poem in a joyful note that all the nine athletes ended the race together hand in hand and won nine gold medals. The poem “Nine Gold Medals” explores the spirit of sportsmanship and human compassion. It demonstrates human kindness and empathy.
