Doctor Faustus, a renowned and esteemed German scholar, is dissatisfied with the constraints imposed by conventional domains of knowledge such as medicine, faith, logic, and the law. He decides he wants to learn how to do magic. His friends Valdes and Cornelius teach him the dark arts, and he starts his new job as a wizard by calling up the devil Mephastophilis.
💫 Mephastophilis keeps telling Faustus how terrible hell is, but Faustus tells the devil to go back to Lucifer and offer Lucifer Faustus' soul in exchange for twenty-four years of service. At the same time, Wagner, Faustus's helper, has learned magic and uses it to force a clown named Robin to work for him. Mephastophilis goes back to Faustus and tells him that Lucifer has agreed to Faustus's deal.
💫 Faustus has some doubts and questions whether he should turn away from his sins and save his life. In the end, he agrees to the deal and signs it with his blood. As soon as he does that, the Latin phrase "Homo fuge," which means "O man, fly," shows up on his arm. Faustus changes his mind again, but Mephastophilis gives him lots of gifts and a book of spells to learn. When Faustus asks Mephastophilis "who made the universe?," he refuses to answer, but he does answer all of his other questions about the world.
💫 Another set of doubts appear in Faustus's mind when Lucifer and Mephastophilis bring in representations of the Seven Deadly Sins to dance in front of him. This impresses him enough to put aside his doubts. With his new abilities and Mephastophilis by his side, Faustus sets out on a journey. He sneaks into the pope's court in Rome, hides, and then plays a bunch of games. He gets in the way of the pope's dinner by stealing food and hitting the pope in the ears. Since this happened, he has been seen in many places across Europe, and his fame grows as he goes.
💫 In the end, he is called to the court of Charles V, the German emperor and enemy of the pope. Charles V asks Faustus to let him see Alexander the Great, the famous Macedonian king and conqueror who lived in the fourth century BCE. Faustus makes a mental picture of Alexander, which impresses Charles. A knight laughs at Faustus's abilities, so Faustus punishes him by growing horns out of his head. In his rage, the knight swears to get even.Meanwhile, Wagner's clown, Robin, has learned some magic on his own, and he and his fellow stablehand, Rafe, get into a lot of funny trouble. He eventually calls up Mephastophilis, who tells him he'll punish Robin and Rafe for being stupid by turning them into animals.
💫 Faustus then continues his journey, pulling a fast one on a horse-courser along the way. Someone buys him a horse that turns into a pile of straw when it falls into a river. In the end, Faustus is called to the Duke of Vanholt's court, where he does many amazing things. Along with Robin, a man named Dick, and other people who've been fooled by Faustus, the horse-courser shows up there. The duke and duchess find it funny that Faustus puts magic on them and sends them on their way.
💫 As the twenty-four years of his deal with Lucifer end, Faustus starts to fear that he is going to die soon. As a way to impress a group of scholars, he has Mephastophilis call up Helen of Troy, the famous beauty from old times. An old man tries to get Faustus to change his mind, but Faustus fights him off. Faustus calls Helen back and raves about how beautiful she is.But time is running out.
When Faustus tells the students about his deal, they are horrified and decide to pray for him. On the last night before the twenty-four years are up, Faustus is filled with fear and regret. He cries out for help, but it is too late. At midnight, a group of demons shows up and takes his soul to hell. The students find Faustus's body parts in the morning and decide to bury him.
