"The Lady or the Tiger?" by  Frank Stockron is a suspenseful story set in semi-barbaric kingdom. The king in this kingdom uses a unique system of trial to decide whether the accused is guilty or innocent.
When a person is accused on any crime, he would be brought in king's arena, a great amphitheater. The accused is made to stand before two identical doors. Behind one door awaits a hungry ferocious tiger ready to tear the accused. Behind the other door is a beautiful lady, whom he would marry as a reward for his innocence.
The novelty about the trial is that the accused is not aware of what is behind the identical door. He has no guidance or influence. The outcome is entirely based on chance and fate. His random decision decides his future, death by tiger or a beautiful lady.
The plot of the story takes a turn, when the king's daughter fell in love with a man of lower status. Their love affair remains secret until the king finds it. This leads to the unique trial in the king's arena.
On the trial day, the young lover looks not at the identical door or the king but the princess. The princess knows which door has tiger behind. She gives him a signal to indicate which door to open. The story ends abruptly with the young lover taking a decision to open one of the door.
Frank Stockron leaves the story open ended  without revealing which choice the man makes or what's behind the chosen door. This leads to much debate and choices. It's left to the reader's interpretation whether he chooses the door leading to the lady or to the tiger.
The story explores themes of fate, choice, and the complexities of human emotions, leaving readers to ponder the moral implications and the nature of justice.
