"The Scribe" is a story about a young boy named James who lives above the Silver Dollar Check Cashing Service. James sees how people who can't read or write are exploited. The owners of the check-cashing business, Old Man Silver and Old Man Dollar, take advantage of people who can't read or write by charging them ridiculous amounts of money to do things like reading, filling out forms, and writing letters. James becomes upset about exploitation and decides to do something about it.
James starts an outdoor service to help people read, write, and fill out forms for free. He gets the idea from his mother's advice and Bible lessons about scribes in ancient times. He turns into a "Public Scribe" and helps people with their paperwork.
But James's good intentions get the attention of a police officer, who tells him he can't do business without a license. James learns how important licenses and rules are when he is in danger of being shut down. As much as he wants to help his neighborhood, he knows that he has to follow the law.
James is finally ready to make a good change. He learns about the benefits of banking and tells people to open accounts at a nearby bank to avoid the shady business practices of the check-cashing service. His actions show his unwavering commitment to the society.
"The Scribe" exposes the social and economic struggles faced by marginalized communities. It explains the significance of education and knowledge. It shows how important it is to help people in need and how one person's actions can change the lives of others.
