Introduction :
Communication is the process of sharing and exchanging information, ideas, thoughts, and emotions between people or groups. It includes a sender who transmits a message using a selected medium to a receiver, who then interprets and comprehends the message. Communication uses various methods such as speaking, writing, body language etc. Communication involves both sending and receiving messages in a way that is clear and understood by everyone.
Terminology :
The word communication is derived from the Latin noun 'communis' and the Latin verb 'communicare' which means 'to make common'. Interaction, interchange, transaction, dialogue, sharing, communion and commonness are the terms that are associated with the term communication.
The Sanskrit term 'sadharanikarain' means 'common' or 'commonness' is the term that is associatd with communication. Sadharanikaran is a social process which is among sahridayas, people who are with a capacity to receive and send messages.
According to Denis McQuail, "communication is a process which increases commonality-but also requires elements of commonality for it to occur at all". Communication is thus a shared symbolic environment, a social relationship among the participants.
The Fact of Communication :
Communication is a fact in the world of human beings, animals and plants and is an every continuing process. Communication is necessary to humans for their existence. The need for communication is as strong and as basic as the need to eat sleep and love. Communication is both an individual and a social need. Communication happens through symbols and mediated interactions.
Effectiveness of Communication :
Effective communication requires not just the transmission of information, but also understanding, interpretation, and feedback to ensure that the intended message is accurately conveyed. Effective communication leads to healthy relation and importance of emotional resilience, helps in interaction and transferring information.
Communication skills help you to understand what others are saying and make sure they understand yours. This includes sharing your ideas clearly, and listening to others, giving and accepting helpful feedback, and speaking in front of groups.
Types of communication :
Communication
can be widely classified into several types: verbal and non verbal, technological and non-technological, mediated and non mediated, participatory and non-participatory and so on. On the basics of typology communication ranges from intrapersonal and interpersonal.
i. Intrapersonal Communication
Intrapersonal Communication is individual reflection, contemplation and meditation. It is the process of conversing with the divine, self-talk, emotional processing and reflecting on experiences.
ii. Interpersonal Communication or Face to Face Communication
Interpersonal communication refers to the exchange of information, thoughts, feelings, and messages between two or more people. It involves both verbal (spoken or written) and nonverbal (body language, facial expressions, gestures, etc.) forms of communication. This type of communication plays a crucial role in building and maintaining relationships, whether personal, professional, or social.
iii. Group Communication
Group communication refers to the exchange of information, ideas, and messages among three or more individuals within a group. It involves interaction between members to achieve common goals, solve problems, make decisions, or share information. Group communication can take place in various settings, such as work teams, social gatherings, committees, classrooms, or family units. Group communication is essential for collaboration, decision-making, and accomplishing shared objectives within a group setting.
iv. Mass Communication
Mass communication refers to the process of transmitting information, messages, or content to a large, widespread audience through various forms of media. It involves the use of technologies that can reach a broad population, often simultaneously. Mass communication plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, providing news, entertainment, education, and advertising on a large scale. Mass communication involves the dissemination of information to a large audience through various media platforms. It plays an essential role in informing, entertaining, educating, and persuading people, and it continues to evolve with advancements in technology.
Conclusion :
